DOLE: P99.22M spent for Pinoys affected by Libya conflict


The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has given out some P99.224 million in economic relief assistance to Filipino workers affected by the volatile situation in Libya. Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the amount includes:

  • P10,000 each to some 9,333 repatriated Filipino workers, and
  • P5.894 million in transport fares for 4,615 repatriates who went to their home provinces. "As of April 5, the government has spent close to P100 million for cash relief assistance for our OFWs repatriated from Libya," said Baldoz, citing an update report of OWWA Administrator Carmelita Dimzon. Baldoz said at least 9,663 OFWs have been repatriated from strife-torn Libya. She said the OWWA has provided counseling services to 2,853 OFWs and temporary shelter to another 922 repatriates. At least 4,615 OFWs also availed of free long-distance calls provided by the OWWA, she said. On the other hand, Baldoz said the National Reintegration Center for OFWs (NRCO) had referred 4,173 OFWs to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) for possible re-deployment. Another 10,433 OFWs, including non-Libya repatriates, were referred to local companies for domestic employment. Baldoz said the NRCO has also provided:
  • business counseling to 163 OFWs;
  • legal assistance to 141 repatriates;
  • entrepreneurship development training to 1,494 repatriates, and
  • referred 786 repatriates to funding agencies for livelihood financial assistance. She added the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has:
  • trade-tested and issued national certificates to 43 repatriates;
  • profiled and referred to the OWWA 391 repatriates for the OWWA scholarship program; and
  • trained 1,491 repatriates under the TESDA's Green Skills Training Program (manicure, pedicure, hair cutting and styling, and materials recycling). – VVP, GMA News
