DPWH offers jobs to out-of-school youths, children of displaced OFWs

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has offered out-of-school youths (OSY) and children of displaced overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) jobs as roadside maintenance workers. DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson said roadside maintenance workers are needed to help prolong service life of roads and other infrastructure. One worker will be assigned for every 3.5 kilometers of national roads except in Metro Manila. In accordance with DOLE guidelines, roadside workers will receive an average minimum rate per day of P404 for those in Metro Manila, P300 for those employed in Regions 3, 4-A and 11, and P250 in the other regions. For proper identification of the workers, Singson said the DPWH offices will provide them with common uniforms. Singson ordered the 182 District Engineering Offices nationwide to start hiring workers on job-order basis for the implementation of the 2011 roadside maintenance program along national highways. He said the new hirees will assist the regular maintenance crew of the District Engineering Offices in:

Cleaning of roadsides, and desilting of drainage canals, longitudinal pipes and cross drains;

Cutting of vegetation along shoulders up to the road-right-of-way;

Manual reshaping of gravel shoulders and carriageway;

Manual pothole patching;

Clearing of sidewalks and immediate response to calamities. The plan to hire OSY and children of displaced OFWs is part of the Aquino administration's accelerated poverty alleviation program, Singson said. The funds for the roadside maintenance program are sourced from the Motor Vehicle Users Charge (MVUC) collected by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) when vehicle owners register their vehicles. â€“ VVP, GMA News
