Phivolcs: Quake hits Mindoro; aftershocks expected

A predawn magnitude-5.3 quake rocked the Mindoro area in Luzon Saturday, with state seismologists warning of possible aftershocks. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake, recorded at 2:29 a.m., was tectonic and was felt in several areas in Metro Manila. In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the quake's epicenter was 36 km southwest of Lubang Island in Mindoro Occidental. Phivolcs said the quake was felt at Intensity III in Quezon City, Manila, Makati City, Muntinlupa City, and Marikina City. It was even felt also at Intensity III in Guiguinto, Bulacan in Central Luzon. An Intensity III quake is described as "weak," Phivolcs said. While Phivolcs said no damage is expected from the quake, residents should brace for possible aftershocks. Meanwhile, a predawn magnitude-2.3 quake was felt in Polillo in Quezon province. Phivolcs said the quake was felt at 12:15 a.m., and the epicenter was 89 km northeast of Polillo. Phivolcs did not immediately cite specific areas where the quake was felt. — LBG, GMA News
