Phivolcs: No tsunami from Tuesday morning Japan quake

State seismologists assured the public no tsunami is expected from a magnitude-6.4 quake that hit Japan early Tuesday morning. Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) research specialist Joan Salcedo said the quake was an aftershock from a magnitude-9 quake that hit Japan March 11. "Base sa lindol wala namang tsunami warning na nilabas para sa Pacific (From this morning's quake, there was no tsunami warning issued for the Pacific area)," Salcedo said in an interview on dzBB radio. However, she said more aftershocks are still expected from the March 11 quake, which triggered a tsunami that devastated parts of northeast Japan. The United States Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 6.4, occurring around 7:08 a.m. Manila time. It said the epicenter was near the east coast of Honshu, Japan or 77 km east-southeast of Tokyo; 82 km east of Yokohama, Honshu; 106 km south of Mito, Honshu; or 140 km south-southeast of Utsunomiya, Honshu. — LBG, GMA News
