Phivolcs: 11 quakes recorded at Taal

Taal Volcano in Batangas remained restive Tuesday, as state volcanologists recorded at least 11 quakes there in the last 24 hours. In its Tuesday update, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology also noted an increase in temperature of the water at the main crater lake. "The seismic network around Taal Volcano recorded 11 volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. Water temperature slightly increased from 30 to 30.5 degrees Celsius. Gas measurements conducted at Taal Main Crater Lake last January, February and March 2011 yielded carbon dioxide (CO2) emission values of 2,250 tonnes per day (t/d), 1,875 t/d and 4,670 t/d respectively," it said). It said the remarkable increase in carbon dioxide concentration shows anomalous gas release from the magma at depth.

Phivolcs said Alert Level 2 remains over Taal Volcano with the interpretation that magma has been intruding towards the surface. The agency advised the public that the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro (1965 -1977 Eruption Site) are strictly off-limits due to possible sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions and high concentrations of toxic gases. "Breathing air with high concentration of gases can be lethal to human, animals and even cause damage to vegetation," it said. Phivolcs also reiterated the entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended. Mayon, Bulusan quiet Meanwhile, Mayon Volcano in Albay and Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon remained relatively quiet, with no volcanic quake recorded there in the last 24 hours. At Mayon, Phivolcs noted a weak emission of white steam from the crater, drifting northwest. It said Alert Level 1 remains in effect over Bulusan and Mayon. — RSJ, GMA News
