Phivolcs: 8 quakes recorded at Taal
While Taal Volcano in Batangas continued to show signs of restlessness, two other volcanoes in the Bicol Region showed signs of increased activity in the last 24 hours. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Bulusan in Sorsogon had four volcanic quakes while Mayon in Albay had two. In its Wednesday update, Phivolcs said the seismic network around Taal recorded eight volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. "One of these events which occurred on 1:47 p.m. (Tuesday) was felt at Intensity II by residents in Barangay Calauit at the southeastern part of Taal Volcano island with rumbling sounds," it said. A separate report on GMA News TV’s “News To Go" said volcanologists from Philvolcs continue to conduct tests on the Taal Volcano’s crater. The tests will determine the acidity and temperature of water samples from the crater, as well as the carbon dioxide level near the area, the report said. Water temperature at the Main Crater Lake was at 30.5 degrees Celsius as of Wednesday, Philvolcs said. The agency added that Alert Level 2 remains hoisted over Taal Volcano with the interpretation that magma has been intruding towards the surface, as shown by carbon dioxide being released in the Main Crater Lake and increase in seismic activity. It maintained the public should stay away from the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro.
