At least 42 families or 163 people have been evacuated from six villages in four towns in Batangas province that may be threatened by restive Taal Volcano. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said 12 families or 51 people are in two evacuation centers while 30 families (112 people) are staying with their relatives. In its 9 a.m. Friday update, the NDRRMC said the evacuated people included:

  • 12 families or 51 people from Pulo Island/Talisay, one family or two people now at Venancio Trinidad Memorial School;
  • 11 families or 49 people from Brgy. Alas-as in San Nicolas town;
  • 25 families or 95 people from Brgy. Looc, San Sebastian and Sala in Balete; and
  • 5 families or 17 people from Brgy. Lumang Lipa in Mataas na Kahoy town. Earlier, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said volcanic activity continued to intensify at Taal Volcano, with at least 16 volcanic quakes recorded in the last 24 hours. In its 7 a.m. Friday update, Phivolcs also said gas measurements at Taal's Main Crater Lake still showed a large increase in carbon dioxide emission compared to January and February.

    Phivolcs said Alert Level 2 remains over Taal Volcano with the interpretation that magma has been intruding towards the surface, and increase in seismic activity. It maintained its advice to the public that the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro are strictly off-limits. Also, Phivolcs reminded the public the entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended. — RSJ, GMA News
