PHL welcomes 'imminent resolution' of row in Ivory Coast

The Philippine government on Saturday welcomed an "imminent resolution" of the conflict in Cote d'Ivoire, following the dramatic turn of events earlier this week. In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) relayed the Filipino people's "solidarity" with the Ivorian people in reconciliation and rebuilding. "On behalf of the Filipino people, the Philippine government extends its solidarity with the Ivorian people during this period of reconciliation and rebuilding," the DFA said on its website. Also, the department said the Philippine government supports the call of President Alassane Ouattara for normalcy to return to Ivorian life. It likewise backed calls for the creation of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to try all cases of abuse committed during the post-election violence. "[The Philippine government] also expresses its appreciation to the Ivorian authorities and people, the United Nations Operations in Cote d'Ivoire, and the French Licorne forces for their assistance to the Filipino nationals who were caught up in the conflict," the DFA said. Life began returning to normal on Wednesday after the collapse of Ivory Coast strongman Laurent Gbagbo. Gbagbo had refused to leave his post as president of the country even though his political rival, Outtara, was recognized as the winner of the election last Nov. 28. Last Wednesday, Gbagbo's military defenses were severely weakened by French and United Nations forces. This led some opposition forces to troop to the presidential residence and seized Gbagbo. — JE/LBG, GMA News
