1 killed in Makati predawn fire

A 79-year-old woman was killed in a predawn fire that hit a residential area in the East Rembo area in Makati City before dawn Sunday. Firefighters recovered the body of the woman, initially identified as Sonia Soriano Conia, from her barong-barong (shanty) after the fire was put out at 5:31 a.m. Neighbors failed to look for her during the fire because they thought she had gone to attend mass early, according to a report by radio dzBB’s Mao dela Cruz. But when the fire was put out, neighbors asked firefighters to check if she was still in her house. The victim’s body was found under the bed of her house at 161, 1-K 20th Avenue in East Rembo. The fire started at the Soriano Compound around 4:45 a.m. and reached the third alarm before it was put out. As of this posting, arson investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire. — LBG, GMA News
