Cops inspect shopping malls, subdivisions in Makati

After inspecting bus terminals and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in past days, Metro Manila police inspected shopping malls Tuesday for their preparedness to deal with the Holy Week exodus. At the same time, Metro Manila police also inspected security at residential subdivisions in Makati City after inspecting nearby malls in the area, radio dzBB's Denver Trinidad reported. Chief Superintendent George Regis, Metro Manila deputy chief for administration, cited complaints from residents in San Lorenzo Village that thieves manage to enter their homes during the Holy Week.

The Metro Manila police held meetings with the residents and gave tips on how to thwart burglars during the Holy Week, the same report said. Earlier, Metro Manila police had inspected bus terminals to ensure the safety of province-bound passengers. Meanwhile, security at the Manila South Harbor tightened as authorities expect more ship passengers to flock the area. GMA News' Susan Enriquez reported over Unang Hirit that the Manila South Harbor had advised passengers to be in the port way ahead of departure time as their luggage will go through lengthy security measures.
Each passenger is allowed to bring at most 50 kilos of baggage, or equivalent to three bags or boxes, which will all be processed through an X-ray machine. Small luggage, however, will be manually inspected by the security. K-9 dog units are also in the port to sniff possible illegal materials in the luggages that are brought in the port, the television report said. On Monday, Metro Manila police chief Director Nicanor Bartolome ordered the relief of a Quezon City police station chief Monday after noting there were no police personnel at key areas at the bus terminal. Also, he led the inspections at the NAIA and reminded police there to be vigilant against criminals preying on arriving and departing passengers. — with Karlitos Brian U. Decena/RSJ, GMA News
