Tagged social network acquires Digsby IM client

San Francisco-based social network Tagged has acquired the software company behind the popular instant messaging/social client Digsby. In a blog entry, the Digsby team said it will be migrating from Rochester to San Francisco later this month "to join our new teammates." "We will continue to support Digsby as a standalone product while also leveraging our expertise in real time communication to develop exciting new products at Tagged. We’re still working with the Tagged team to figure out the long-term plans for Digsby," it said. Digsby is an instant-messaging and social client that allows users to manage multiple accounts on various networks including Yahoo, Gmail, MSN/Live, AIM, Twitter, and ICQ. "We will continue our mission of making online communication easy and efficient as part of the Tagged team and we’re excited about the opportunity to bring many of our innovations to Tagged’s 100 million users across the world," the Digsby team added. But it also said a short-term benefit for Digsby users will be the removal of bundled offers during the installation of the software. Digsby had earlier given users offers to install bundled toolbars and programs during installation. "We are removing all bundled offers shown during installation of Digsby. We hope this will make Digsby a better experience for you and your friends. :)," the team said. It also assured users their account information is safe, and will not be accessible to employees of both Digsby and Tagged. Digsby said it has established "very strong safeguards" to ensure Digsby and Tagged employees cannot retrieve the passwords. A separate story on TechCrunch said that Tagged has been notable because of its ability to grow profitably during the Facebook era. The TechCrunch story said dotSyntax —the company behind Digsby— was its first acquisition. "The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but all seven dotSyntax employees will join Tagged," it said. The story disclosed that Digsby and Tagged have over three million and 100 million registered users, respectively, and that the former has already raised $500,000 in funding. — TJD, GMA News
