Guadalupe fire victims ask for additional help

An estimated 2,700 families whose homes burned down at the Laperal Compound in Guadalupe Viejo village in Makati City appealed to the government on Wednesday for additional assistance. "Kasi kailangan yung mga pagkain tsaka damit, pagkain, banig tsaka tubig (We need food, clothes, and water)," a displaced resident said in a report aired over GMA's Unang Balita on Wednesday. An initial National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) report indicated that 900 homes and P9 million worth of property was destroyed in Tuesday noon's fire.

GMA reporter Dante Perello said most of the affected residents slept on cartons that were pieced together along the Amapola Street in Guadalupe Viejo or at the parking lot of the Loyola Memorial Chapel and Crematorium. A separate report on Wednesday, dzBB's Denver Trinidad said the Makati Engineering Office has also set up tents for the residents who slept on the street. He said that some residents also took shelter at the San Carlos Seminary and the Nuestra Señora de Gracia Church, which are both beside the compound. Perello said the Philippine Red Cross has set up two first aid booths while water concessionaire Maynilad has placed a water tank for the displaced residents. He said that five portalets have likewise been installed at the site of the evacuees for their use.
Perello said that the City Social Welfare Department has begun taking down the names of the residents who will be given relief goods. The department noted, however, that affected residents need to have certain cards for them to avail of the relief assistance. A staff of the department said that yellow cards shall be given to "sharers," pink to renters, and orange to home owners. Quoting Senior Fire Officer 2 Gerson Moncada, Trinidad said the police are still in the process of investigating the cause of the fire. He said that 90 percent of the homes in the compound burned down. Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr., meanwhile, appealed to the affected residents to take the offer of the Makati government for them to permanently transfer to designated relocation sites so that the same accident won't happen again. - RSJ, GMA News
