Junjun Binay orders safety inspection after Makati fire

Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin "Junjun" Binay Jr. ordered a safety assessment of the structures, including the giant billboards, that were affected by a fire that razed 900 houses in the Laperal compound of the city on Tuesday. Binay also ordered city officials to look into whether it was safe to allow the affected residents back into the Laperal Compound. "(Mayor Binay) directed the City Engineering Department to inspect the structural soundness of billboards and other structures affected by the fire," the city government said in a news release on its website. Tuesday's fire affected 2,700 families, injured nine people, destroyed 900 houses, and caused some P9 million in damage to property. Binay noted that the area has been hit by fires several times, is crowded, and lacks basic sanitation facilities. On Wednesday, Binay reiterated his appeal to the affected residents to relocate. “We are strongly urging them to relocate. We feel that the place may no longer be safe. It’s for their own safety and peace of mind," he said. Binay said the city government had offered relocation at the Makati-GK Village in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan and in Calauan, Laguna. He also assured the residents they will continue to receive benefits as Makati residents even if they relocate. - VVP, GMA News
