12 quakes recorded near Taal in last 24 hrs

At least 12 volcanic quakes were recorded around restive Taal Volcano in Batangas in the last 24 hours, state volcanologists said Sunday. But Mayon Volcano in Albay and Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon were relatively quiet, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. "Taal Volcano's seismic network recorded 12 volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. Field observation and measurements conducted at the eastern sector inside the Main Crater Lake showed that the water temperature increased from 30.5 to 31.5 degrees Celsius," Phivolcs said in its Sunday update on Taal. It said Alert Level 2 remains over Taal Volcano with the interpretation that magma has been intruding towards the surface. Phivolcs reminded the public the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro are strictly off-limits because sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate. Also, it reminded the public the entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended. In Albay, Phivolcs said the seismic network around Mayon Volcano did not record any volcanic earthquake during the past 24 hours. But it said weak steaming was observed drifting north-northwest and west-southwest. Also, it said an Intensity II crater glow was observed Saturday night. Phivolcs said Alert Level 1 remains over Mayon Volcano. In Sorsogon, Phivolcs said Bulusan had no volcanic quake in the past 24 hours. Phivolcs said Bulusan Volcano's status remains at Alert Level 1, meaning the source of activity is hydrothermal and shallow. But it maintained entry to the 4-kilometer radius PDZ is strictly prohibited, since the area is at risk to sudden steam and ash explosions. — LBG, GMA News
