Phivolcs: No tsunami threat from Indo quakes

State seismologists allayed fears of a tsunami from a magnitude-6 quake that hit Sulawesi in Indonesia early on Monday morning. Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) head Renato Solidum Jr. said the quake was recorded at 7:07 a.m. and measured magnitude 6. "Sa Sulawesi area ito. Hindi ito makakaapekto sa atin (This occurred in the Sulawesi area. It is not likely to affect us)," he said in an interview on dzBB radio. "Walang significant effect yan sa atin (It has no significant effect on us)," he added. The United States Geological Survey recorded the quake at magnitude-6.2. It said the epicenter was 75 km south-southeast of Kendari, Sulawesi; 99 km north-northeast of Baubau, Sulawesi; 534 km northwest of Dili, Timor-Leste; or 1,240 km northwest of Darwin, Australia. However, the USGS also recorded a magnitude-4.8 aftershock at 7:25 a.m., with the epicenter at 23 km south-southeast of Kendari, Sulawesi; 143 km north of Baubau, Sulawesi; 1,289 km northwest of Darwin; or 1,763 km east of Jakarta, Indonesia. - GMA News
