Parts of Mindanao may suffer outages Monday evening

Parts Mindanao may suffer power outages between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday because of delays in the repair and maintenance of the Pulangi IV hydropower plant in Bukidnon. “Some of the repairs and maintenance work that we did in Pulangi is slightly delayed so whether they finish this afternoon or not will determine if there will be brownouts in Mindanao during the peak times of about 5:30 to 8:00 tonight," Energy Secretary Jose Almendras said in a statement issued by Malacañang. The National Power Corp. is working overtime to complete the repair and maintenance works of Pulangi IV. Plant Manager Rudy Brioso also said in the statement that the power plant was closed last week for engineers to inspect the unit for cracks and leaks. The power plant has not been inspected since it was commissioned 25 years ago, and that “a complete drawdown" or draining of the water is needed so the structure may be thoroughly inspected, he added. The Pulangi hydropower plant — commissioned in 1985 — contributes about 255 megawatts to the Mindanao grid. VS, GMA News
