CHR begins probe on violent demolition in Makati City

The Commission of Human Rights (CHR) has begun its investigation into the violent clash between residents of the Laperal Compound in Makati City and a demolition team from the city government. In a radio dzBB report, CHR Commissioner Jose Mamauag said he has ordered a team from CHR-National Capital Region to investigate the two-day clearing operation at the fire-razed squatters' colony that was marred by violence on Thursday afternoon. At least 19 people were hurt in demolition violence when residents insisting to stay in the area threw stones and bottles at members of the demolition team. The team was secured by elements of the Makati police who were ordered to clear the area after the city government declared it a "danger zone." Some were even reportedly hit by gun bullets. Mamauag said the CHR is awaiting the report from the investigating team that monitored the incident on Thursday afternoon so the commission could take the legal action if there is a need for it. On April 19, the compound was razed by a fire that reached general alarm and displaced at least 2,000 families or up to 10,000 people. Makati City officials on April 26 declared the fire-hit area a "danger zone" and ordered police and village officials to stop residents from returning to their houses due to safety concerns. Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. said the site of the compound is "dangerous" and "must not be inhabited," noting that the latest fire was the fourth to hit the area. — Emmanuel Louis Bacani/LBG/RSJ, GMA News
