NDRRMC: 3 dead, 22 downed by diarrhea in Albay

Three residents died while at least 22 others were hospitalized due to diarrhea in a village in Daraga town in Albay province in Bicol since last month. On Tuesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said water from a spring was a likely cause of the incident. "Victims’ ages range from 8 months to 53 years old ... (There were) three fatalities, one last April 26, confined at Ludovice General Hospital and two this weekend, those already admitted in the BRTT Hospital," it said in a report posted Tuesday on its website. In its 9 p.m. Monday report, the NDRRMC identified two of the three fatalities as:

  • Arthur Mirandilla, 53; and
  • Rolly Maravillas, 53. Also, it said 55 percent of the affected were adult males while most cases had signs of loose bowel movement, nausea/vomiting, and yellowish to greenish stool. Also, an ocular investigation of the water sources showed that the unimproved spring is just located in a distant area where the victims were residing. Local health workers coordinated with the village council to prevent residents from collecting water from the spring. The Gapo village council also fenced off the spring. The NDRRMC identified 20 of the cases (excluding the fatalities) as: 1. Erwin Maravillas, 32 2. Mikaela Completo, 8 mos. 3. Kevin Completo, 9 4. Salvador Completo, 30 5. Marivic Completo, 34 6.
