Army captain killed in Negros clash with Reds

An Army officer was killed while another soldier was wounded as troops on Tuesday morning attacked a communist rebel camp in Sta. Catalina town in Negros Oriental, a military official said. Capt. Wilson Montenegro, commanding officer of the 2nd Scout Ranger Company, was killed when New People’s Army (NPA) rebels, armed with machine guns, fought back at the attacking soldiers, said Maj. John Andrada of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division. Hurt in the attack was identified only as Pfc. Javier. Andrada said the camp belonged to the Sentro de Grabidad of the Southeastern Front of the NPA and was located at Sitio Avocado in Talatak village. “This is a deliberate operation. We received prior information that there is an enemy camp there in the area, but sad to say, we have one KIA (killed in action)," he said. Andrada said they were able to overrun the rebels’ encampment. “There were undetermined number of casualties on the enemy side and we found some of their belongings and empty shells," he added. — KBK, GMA News
