St. Benilde students take part in Model UN conference in NY


Filipino students from De La Salle College-St. Benilde participated in the recently-concluded Model United Nations Conference in New York in the United States. "Comprised mainly of Diplomatic and Consular Affairs majors, the students were assigned to take on the role of the Romanian delegation in 20 simulated UN meetings, including a simulated General Assembly meeting," the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a news release. The DFA, citing data from the National Model UN website, said over 5,000 students from around the world participate in the annual conference. Philippine Permanent Representative to the UN Libran Cabactulan cited the importance of the Model UN conference as a "venue for training young minds who will one day take on the task of addressing global issues facing the international community." He encouraged the students to "take on every opportunity to learn about Philippine diplomatic work by taking advantage of various resources, including the DFA official website, the Philippine Mission official website and other e-resources." Meanwhile, De La Salle-College of St. Benilde-School of Multidisciplinary Studies dean Remedios Lorica thanked Cabactulan for welcoming the students to the Mission. Students from Italy Cabactulan also met with students from the University of Macerata in Italy when they made a courtesy call at the Philippine Mission. The students from the university of Macerata, who also participated in the Model UN Conference, where they took on the role of the Philippine delegation in the meetings. "In welcoming the students, Permanent Representative Cabactulan underscored the ties shared by the Philippines and Italy and stressed the importance of continually reaffirming the bond between both nations through people-to-people contact," the DFA said. The DFA said Cabactulan encouraged the students to "learn more about the Philippines, its vibrant democracy, its rich heritage and culture, and its partnership with countries like Italy in the pursuit of greater global peace, progress and prosperity." University of Macerata's Dr. Benedetta Barbisan expressed gratitude and appreciation to Cabactulan for the opportunity to learn more about the work of the Philippines in the UN, particularly on migrant workers issues, disarmament and non-nuclear proliferation, and the environment.- VVP, GMA News
