PAGASA: LPA may bring flash floods over Bicol, Visayas, Mindanao

Flash floods and landslides loom over Bicol in southern Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao as a low-pressure area (LPA) continued to approach Mindanao, state weather forecasters said Thursday noon. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the LPA was estimated at 280 km east of Surigao City as of 10 a.m. "This disturbance is expected to bring scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms in the Bicol Region, Visayas and Mindanao becoming widespread rains over the Bicol Region, Visayas and Northeastern Mindanao which may trigger flashfloods and landslides," it said in an 11 a.m. advisory posted after noon on its website. Should the LPA become a cyclone, it will be codenamed "Bebeng." Earlier, PAGASA said the LPA was not likely to intensify into a cyclone as it may hit land before gaining strength. — LBG, GMA News
