NDRRMC: 'Bebeng' death toll now at 15; damage at P117M


The death toll from Tropical Storm Bebeng (international name: Aere) went up to 15 Tuesday morning while at least three people remained missing. In its 6 a.m. update on Tuesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said 11 of the 15 people who died were from the Bicol Region while two were from Eastern Visayas. In Bicol, "Bebeng" damaged 7,245 hectares of rice, corn, high-value commercial crops and livestock, amounting to P117.825 million, affecting 2,236 farmers. In Central Luzon, 79 percent of rice production in the region had already been harvested but damages may be expected if rains continue in the next 48 hours. Among the latest casualties were:

  • Rolandro Balandia, of Nabua, Camarines Sur (drowning, previously reported missing); and
  • Mario Nuñez, 52, of Nabua, Camarines Sur (drowning). Those injured included Judy Llantero and Dominador Jamito of Mercedes, Camarines Norte. Those still missing are:
  • Agmeti Condat, 66, of Tiwi, Albay;
  • Dodoy Ronan of Bula, Camarines Sur; and
  • a certain Mr. Abagat of Bula, Camarines Sur.
    The NDRRMC said "Bebeng" had affected some 33,034 families (or 173,915) people in 237 villages in 31 towns in 10 provinces. Of these, 313 families (or 1,449 people) are housed in 11 evacuation centers. As of 7:30 p.m. on Monday, the number of stranded people in affected areas went down to 68, including 38 in Pasacao in Camarines Sur and 30 in Calaguas Island in Camarines Norte. Flooding Meanwhile, seven villages in Botolan town in Zambales experienced two- to four-foot deep floodwaters. In Southern Luzon, flooding occurred in Dela Costa Subdivision, San Jose village in Rodriguez and Sitio Ibayoin Maly village in San Mateo, both in Rizal province. In Metro Manila, a landslide hit the NHA Bilibid Housing in Muntinlupa City due to the swelling of the river. Another landslide occurred in Senatorial Street in San Mateo Road in Batasan Hills, Quezon City Monday, affecting eight members of a family. Flash floods occurred along the Alabang Riverside in Muntinlupa, and in Navotas City. A landslide also occurred at Camp 2 along Kennon Road in Tuba, Benguet. Impassable roads As of 11:00 p.m. Monday, at least 11 roads remain impassable in Bicol and Cordillera, including 10 in Bicol and one in Benguet. Some towns in Northern Samar have no power while Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes and Camarines Sur have power interruptions. Pililia town in Rizal experienced a power outage on Sunday but power was restored the next day. Power has also been restored in Marinduque. - VVP/RSJ, GMA News
