Latest Google Chrome beta ups online safety

Search giant Google has added safety features to the latest beta of its Chrome Web browser, the heart of its upcoming Chromebooks. In a blog post, Google software engineer Jason Kersey said Chrome 12.0.742.30 has been released to the Beta channel for all platforms. Kersey said that Chrome 12.0.742.30 includes a number of new features and updates, including:

  • Hardware accelerated 3D CSS
  • New Safe Browsing protection against downloading malicious files
  • Ability to delete Flash cookies from inside Chrome
  • Launch Apps by name from the Omnibox
  • Integrated Sync into new settings pages
  • Improved screen reader support
  • New warning when hitting Command-Q on Mac
  • Removal of Google Gears
A separate article on Electronista.com said the latest beta of Chrome automatically checks download types and issues a warning if it suspects the file is a trojan or other malware. "Its investigation goes beyond basic filters like file types and uses the same mechanism Google does to screen websites on its search page," Electronista said. Electronista also quoted Google as saying that the latter has withdrawn its Gears plugin since support for offline apps in HTML5 has mostly rendered Gears obsolete. The latest beta also features multi-tab select, which allows a user to select multiple tabs using the Ctrl button and perform actions on them like reloading all webpages or closing tabs among other things, Techie-Buzz reported. Techie-Buzz said that another new feature available in this build is an experimental new tab page (about:flags). The report added that Chrome 12 also has a new experimental "FPS counter" feature which will display a page’s actual frame rate (FPS) when hardware acceleration is active. — TJD, GMA News
