Fil-Am with drug past indicted for killing stepmom in Hawaii


CHICAGO – A Filipino American, who is said to have a “violent past" that involved a problem with drug addiction, was indicted on Wednesday for allegedly stabbing his stepmother to death in Hawaii. Dave Coga, executive assistant for communications in the City’s Prosecutor’s office, told GMA News Online that Charlie Hernane, 27, is now detained at Oahu Correctional Center and will face preliminary hearing of the case next week. A a grand jury indicted Hernane for murder in the second degree for allegedly stabbing his stepmother to death on May 11 in her bedroom in their home in Honolulu, Hawaii. Hernane was accused of stabbing Teresita Hernane, 56, on the face. The victim was found dead by her niece, Misshell Dumalan, who called 911. The police recovered the knife used in the crime and Hernane was arrested just a few blocks away from the crime scene. The police found the suspect behind the Kalakua District Park Gym wearing a shirt that looked "blood-splattered." Hernane did not resist arrest and is being held in lieu of a $100,000 bail. If convicted, Hernane faces a maximum life in prison with possibility of parole. Drug past According to the victim's neighbors, Teresita was a "caring person." Teresita was said to have worked as a hotel maintenance staff before she contracted a kidney disease. According to accounts, Teresita reportedly brought Hernane from the Philippines to Hawaii in 1994. The suspect was reportedly out of work and was dependent on the victim. - VVP, GMA News
