PAGASA: Floods, landslides may hit parts of Mindanao

Flash floods and landslides may hit parts of Southern Mindanao due to rains brought by an inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ), the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Saturday. ITCZ, also known as doldrums, is the result of convergence of warm and cold winds, forming an often continuous band of clouds or thunderstorms. The state weather forecasters said the ITCZ will also affect some parts of Southern Luzon and Visayas. "Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. Widespread rains over Southern Mindanao... may trigger flashfloods and landslides," PAGASA said. Meanwhile, a tropical cyclone is expected to enter Philippine territory either Saturday night or Sunday morning, according to PAGASA. The cyclone, which will be named "Chedeng" once inside the Philippine area of responsibility, is still 1,220 km east of Mindanao as of 2 p.m., PAGASA said. The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be slight to moderate, it added. — ELR/JE, GMA News
