8 quakes in 7 hours rattle Isabela; 4 others elsewhere


At least eight quakes rattled Isabela province in Northeastern Luzon since Saturday night, with state seismologists warning of possible aftershocks. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the first quake measured magnitude 5.5 and was recorded at 9:08 p.m. Saturday. Phivolcs said the epicenter was 4 km southeast of Ilagan, Isabela. While no damage was expected, Phivolcs warned of possible aftershocks. It was felt at Intensity V (Strong) in Ilagan, Isabela; Intensity IV (Moderately Strong) in Tuguegarao City in Cagayan, Penablanca in Cagayan, Quirino in Isabela, Tumawini in Isabela, Baler in Aurora. It was also felt at Intensity II (Slightly felt) in Baguio City and Tabuk in Kalinga. A second quake measuring magnitude 3.4 was recorded at 10:12 p.m., with the epicenter also at 4 km northeast of Ilagan. The third measured magnitude 2.4, with the epicenter at 6 km southeast of Ilagan. A fourth measuring magnitude 2.1 was recorded at 12:19 a.m. Sunday, with the epicenter at 10 km southwest o Ilagan. Phivolcs warned anew of possible aftershocks in the fourth quake. The fifth measured magnitude 2.3 and was recorded at 12:52 a.m., with the epicenter at 4 km southeast of Ilagan. The sixth measured magnitude 3.3 and was recorded at 1:44 a.m., with the epicenter at 12 km southeast of Ilagan. A seventh measuring magnitude 3.3 was recorded at 2:19 a.m., with the epicenter at 5 km southwest of Ilagan. The eighth measured magnitude 2.6 and was recorded at 3:48 a.m., with the epicenter at 2 km southwest of Ilagan. Phivolcs warned of possible aftershocks after the eighth quake. 4 other quakes elsewhere Meanwhile, Phivolcs said quakes also hit the provinces of Iloilo in Western Visayas region, Cagayan in northern Luzon, Dinagat Island in northeastern Mindanao and Zambales in Central Luzon between Saturday night and before dawn Sunday. In Iloilo, a magnitude-2.9 quake was recorded at 9:42 p.m., with the epicenter at 7 km northeast of Dingle town. In Cagayan, a magnitude-2.5 quake was recorded at 10:30 p.m., with the epicenter at 9 km northwest of Rizal town. In Dinagat Island, a magnitude-4.5 quake was recorded at 10:56 p.m., with the epicenter at 8 km southwest of Loreto. In Zambales, a magnitude-3.4 quake was recorded at 1:01 a.m., with the epicenter at 85 km northwest of Iba town. No damage or aftershock was expected from the four quakes. — LBG, GMA News
