Enrile: Senate debates on RH bill likely in late July

With just two weeks to go before Congress adjourns, debates on the Senate version of the reproductive health (RH) bill may not get going until at least late July. Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said that while he expects the bill to be sponsored before the last day of session on June 7, there may not be enough time for debates. “Hindi matatapos yan, sa next session na... Siguro yun lang sponsorship ang mangyayari riyan (There may not be enough time to complete the debates on the bill. It may have to be taken up in the next session)," he said in an interview on dzBB radio. Both houses of Congress – the Senate and the House of Representatives – will have their sine die adjournment June 10 until July 24. The next session of Congress will start July 25, when President Benigno Aquino is expected to deliver his second State of the Nation Address before both houses of Congress. Enrile also belied speculations the bill will be rejected in the Senate as he and majority leader Vicente Sotto III are both “pro-life," or against the RH bill. “We’re not going to reject it, we’ll study it and discuss it and debate it," he said. — LBG, GMA News
