LRT 1 to go on limited operations May 28 to 30

The Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) will go on limited operations starting Saturday (May 28) to next Monday (May 30), with its trains not passing through some stations so it can integrate the signaling system of its North Extension Project into its existing line. In an advisory on its website Wednesday afternoon, the LRT Administration said shuttle buses will be made available for commuters in areas affected by the limited operations. "The Light Rail Transit Authority Line 1 will temporarily operate only from Baclaran to Blumentritt station starting May 28 to 30, 2011 to integrate the signalling system of the North Extension Project with the existing LRT Line 1 system to ensure a more efficient and safer rail service," it said. It said shuttle buses will be available during the LRT's operating hours to ferry passengers who may want to ride. Such buses will go to the following stations and back:

  • Abad Santos
  • R. Papa
  • 5th Avenue
  • Monumento
  • Balintawak
  • Roosevelt. LRTA Administrator Rafael Rodriguez assured riders they will work as quickly as possible to complete the job by Sunday, according to a report by radio dzBB's Mao dela Cruz. The limited operations also came after a series of glitches that disrupted the LRT-1's operations in past weeks. Among the latest incidents was a two-hour glitch that disrupted the LRT-1's operations last May 19. At the time, LRTA spokesman Hernando Cabrera blamed the signaling system at Roosevelt Station for the glitch. Earlier this month, an air leak on an LRT-2 train at C.M. Recto Avenue in Manila disrupted operations for several minutes. Also, Cabrera blamed "overloading" for the tendency of LRT or Metro Rail Transit trains to break down during rush hour. "Sa peak hour overloaded tayo ... ... kaya ng sistema pero kung bugbog na bugbog doon nasisira ang spare parts at components (Our trains are overloaded during peak hours. The system can handle the load but the parts tend to break when the train is overcrowded at rush hour)," he said in an earlier interview on dzBB radio. — RSJ, GMA News
