BIR files tax evasion raps vs current, former GSIS execs

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Thursday filed a tax evasion complaint against a current and a former board member of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) who supposedly failed to declare their income and pay the proper taxes. The BIR said incumbent board member Mario Ramirez owes the BIR P9.3 million in taxes while former board member Esperanza Ocampo has an aggregate tax liability of P13.7 million At a news briefing, BIR commissioner Kim Henares said Ramirez received a taxable income of P18.3 million as GSIS board member. For her part, Ocampo received a taxable income of P27.7 million. But the BIR Returns Processing System revealed that Ramirez failed to declare his income from 2008 to 2010, while Ocampo failed to declare hers from 2004 to 2010. "It's in the system. So I hope everyone would do the right thing, report the right income sales revenue and expenses. Because sooner or later, we will be able to detect it," Henares said. As of posting time, GMA News Online is still trying to reach GSIS Officer V Margie Jorillo, who is authorized to make a comment on the matter. Jorillo directly works under the office of GSIS president and general manager Robert Vergara. Henares said the BIR's inquiry stemmed from the Senate finance committee's investigation into the allegedly fat bonuses and perks received by officials of government-owned and -controlled corporations (GOCCs) like GSIS.
