'Chedeng' nears Batanes; Babuyan also under Signal 2


Babuyan Islands in extreme northern Luzon was included in areas under Storm Signal No. 2 as Typhoon Chedeng (Songda) moved closer to Batanes Friday morning. Earlier placed under Signal 2 was Batanes province. Five areas were also placed under Storm Signal 1, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said in its 11 a.m. advisory. These were:

  • Apayao
  • Cagayan
  • Isabela
  • Quirino
  • Aurora
    PAGASA said that as of 10 a.m., Chedeng was estimated at 210 km east of Aparri, Cagayan, with maximum sustained winds of 195 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 230 kph. It was moving north northwest at 19 kph and is expected to be 290 km northeast of Basco, Batanes Saturday morning. By Sunday morning it is expected to be 710 km northeast of Basco, Batanes or 100 km south of Okinawa, Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency's 8:50 a.m. update indicated that Chedeng was "very intense" Friday, and will be "very strong" on Saturday and "strong" on Sunday. JMA also indicated Chedeng may start moving northeast towards Southern Japan. Meanwhile, PAGASA said residents in low-lying and mountainous areas under storm signals should be alert against possible flash floods and landslides. Those living in coastal areas should be alert against big waves or storm surges, it added. PAGASA also said Chedeng is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and will bring rains over Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao including Metro Manila. — RSJ, GMA News
