Pinoy bet for IMO Secgen visits Bangladesh

The Philippines' candidate for the post of Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) visited Dhaka in Bangladesh recently to seek support for his campaign. Neil Frank Ferrer met with Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs-UN Wing Director Ishrat Jahan Ahmed in April, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a news release posted on its website on Thursday. Ferrer also met with Bangladesh Minister of Shipping Shajahan Khan, the DFA said. "During the meeting, Mr. Ferrer outlined his plans for the IMO if given the chance to lead the organization," the DFA said. Ferrer also cited his being the lone candidate from a developing country that shares similar issues with Bangladesh. The IMO is the United Nations' specialized agency responsible for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships. The IMO is highly important to the Philippines because a large chunk of the world's seafarers are Filipinos. - VVP, GMA News
