PAGASA: LPA off Zambales may cause floods, landslides in Western Luzon

State weather forecasters are monitoring a low-pressure area off Zambales province, which they said may bring flash floods and landslides in parts of Luzon. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the LPA is estimated at 390 km west of Iba, Zambales as of 2 p.m. "This disturbance is expected to bring monsoon rains over Luzon and Western Visayas becoming widespread rains over the Western section of Luzon which may trigger flashfloods and landslides," it said in an advisory. PAGASA did not say if the LPA has a good chance of intensifying into a cyclone. If it does, it will be codenamed "Dodong." Residents in parts of Luzon and Eastern Visayas are still recovering from typhoon "Chedeng" (Songda), which did not make landfall on the Philippines but enhanced the monsoon rains and caused at least three deaths. PAGASA advised residents in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes to observe precautionary measures against the rains from the LPA. In the meantime, PAGASA said Luzon and Western Visayas will experience occasional rains while the rest of the country will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. Moderate to strong winds blowing from the Southwest will prevail over Luzon and Visayas and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the Southeast to south with slight to moderate seas. — KBK, GMA News
