Army soldiers honor Pacquiao at Fort Bonifacio

The Philippine Army honored boxing champ and Sarangani Rep. Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao in a testimonial parade and review at the headquarters of the Philippine Army at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City. Col. Antonio Parlade Jr., Army spokesperson, said the testimonial review at the Hunters ROTC Guerrilla Parade Ground is the army’s way of recognizing Pacquiao for his achievements as a sportsman and as a member of the Philippine Army. “As a reservist in the Philippine Army, Senior Master Sergeant Pacquiao has never failed to inspire his fellow soldiers. His excellent personal discipline and quest for excellence are worthy of emulation," Parlade said. Pacquiao has successfully defended his WBO Welterweight Title in a 12-round decision over Sugar Shane Mosley. It was Pacquiao’s 14th consecutive victory in the boxing ring.

Lieutenant General Arturo Ortiz, the commanding general of the Philippine Army, said he was proud of Pacquiao’s latest feat. “I want every soldier to acquire the exemplary training discipline and dedication of Pacman. We need these attributes as we carry out our mandate to serve the Filipino people," Ortiz said. Ortiz gave Pacquiao a medallion which is usually given to senior military officers and visiting dignitaries. A plaque of recognition was also given to Pacquiao, citing his “outstanding accomplishment which brought lasting honor to the Philippine army and the Filipino people as a whole." Pacquiao was also given a mini-statue of Filipino hero Andres Bonifacio after whom the 26-square kilometer military camp is named. Pacquiao has received numerous military awards such as:

the Philippine Legion of Honor with the Degree of Officer given to him during the 73rd anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Philippines on December 21, 2008, and

the Outstanding Achievement Medal given on September 4, 2009. Pacquiao was enlisted in the Reserve Force of the Philippine Army in the rank of Sergeant on April 27, 2006. He is the incumbent Command Sergeant Major of the 15th Ready Reserve Division of the Philippine army based in Fort Bonifacio. - VVP, GMA News
