FDA releases initial list of high-risk products from Taiwan for pullout

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday released an initial list of products from Taiwan believed contaminated with the plasticizer di(ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) for pullout from store shelves. In FDA Advisory 2011-008, the FDA also said products "whether registered or not with the FDA" but identified in the list will be recalled and disposed of accordingly. The FDA said products registered but not identified in the list shall be withdrawn from the market, and laboratory analysis will be required from them to confirm the absence of DEHP. Only then shall these products be allowed for redistribution, it added. The full list can be downloaded from the FDA website at http://www.bfad.gov.ph. However, some of the products in the FDA's list appeared to be mentioned more than once. Later Wednesday afternoon, the FDA uploaded a summary of implicated products worldwide, which included products from Taiwan to Singapore, Hong Kong, Xiamen and Beijing (China), and Canada. Advice to consumers, manufacturers In the meantime, the FDA asked consumers not to use products that have been recalled, and "throw them away in a manner that prevents others from consuming them." "Persons who think they may have become ill from consuming the affected products are advised to consult their health care providers," it added. The FDA also urged distributors, importers and retailers to "stop importing and selling the recalled products," and asked institutions and food service establishments to "ensure that recalled products are not served." It asked manufacturers to stop acquiring the implicated products, and to inform consumers about whether their products could contain DEHP from their sources in Taiwan. "If a manufacturer knows their products do not contain DEHP, they should inform consumers of that," it said. "The FDA shall continuously monitor and collect products in the local market to ensure the safe supply of products imported from Taiwan," it added. Meanwhile, a report on dzBB radio on Wednesday said the FDA met with representatives of supermarkets and manufacturers and received an assurance that they "want to do their part to ensure the safety of the public."
