NHCP to lead 113th PHL Independence Day celebration

Malacañang has directed the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) to lead the organization and implementation of the 113th Independence Day celebration on June 12. Through Administrative Order 11 signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, the Palace announced that it has set aside at least P10 million for the activities. The celebration will be held simultaneously nationwide with Filipino communities worldwide. Independence Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898 by General Emilio Aguinaldo and Filipino revolutionary forces from the Spanish colonization. On June 12, 1898, the Philippine flag was raised and the national anthem was played for the first time. The 1898 Treaty of Paris ended the war between Spain and the US. Spain ceded the Philippines to the US. The Philippines started a revolt against the US in 1899 and achieved national sovereignty on July 4, 1946. Independence Day was officially observed on July 4 until the Republic Act 4166 that designated June 12 as the country's Independence Day was signed into law by the late President Diosdado Macapagal on August 4, 1964. Earlier, the Palace called on Filipinos to display the Philippine flag at home, offices, schools, public buildings and plazas, as well as embassies and consulates overseas beginning May 28, in celebration of National Flag Day, until June 12. — JE, GMA News
