Palace to critics: Question new envoy to China before CA

Malacañang on Saturday deflected criticisms surrounding President Benigno Aquino III’s appointment of a “family friend" as envoy to China, saying its critics should contest the selection before the Commission on Appointments. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said Aquino’s appointment of Domingo Lee as Philippine ambassador to China was based on trust, confidence, and “capability." “We would not wish to question the President’s judgment… It is the President who sees the broader spectrum of things. Mas nasa posisyon siya para makita kung sino ang pwede sa puwesto," she said on government-run dzRB radio. Valte said it would be “prudent" to give Lee a chance to do his job before his capability is criticized. Besides, the Commission on Appointment is the “proper venue to air concerns" about his qualifications, she added. On Saturday, the Daily Tribune newspaper reported Lee’s appointment triggered criticisms from “top Philippine diplomats" who expressed doubts on Lee’s ability to handle sensitive issues with China, given his lack of experience in foreign relations. Lee’s appointment also came amid several reported Chinese incursions in Spratlys. Increasing Chinese activities and incursions in Philippine-claimed territories had caused tension in the area and prompted Manila to protest the incidents. — JE, GMA News
