Sony confirms latest hack, apologizes to users

Sony Pictures on Saturday (Manila time) confirmed a hack on its site, and has asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to look into the incident. In a statement, Sony Pictures Entertainment also apologized to its users for the inconvenience caused by the data breach. "We have confirmed that a breach has occurred and have taken action to protect against further intrusion. A respected team of outside experts is conducting a forensic analysis of the attack," Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael Lynton and co-chairman Amy Pascal said in a statement. The company said that they have contacted the FBI and are working with them to "assist in the identification and apprehension of those responsible for this crime." According to them, Sony Pictures is among the victims of a "cybercrime wave" that has affected Sony companies and a number of government agencies, businesses and individuals in recent months. "We deeply regret and apologize for any inconvenience caused to consumers by this cybercrime," they said. Earlier, hacker group LulzSec claimed to break into SonyPictures.com and compromised more than one million users' personal information. LulzSec also claimed to have compromised administrative details of Sony Pictures, along with 75,000 music codes and 3.5 million music coupons. "Included in our collection are databases from Sony BMG Belgium & Netherlands. These also contain varied assortments of Sony user and staffer information," it said. — TJD, GMA News
