NDRRMC: Losses from fish kill reach over P190M

The losses from the fish kill that hit parts of Pangasinan and Batangas went up to P190.71 million as of Monday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said. In its 4:00 p.m. update on Monday, the NDRRMC said the amount includes P150 million in Region IV-A; and P40.71 million in Pangasinan. According to the NDRRMC, the most recent losses included 100 to 150 metric tons worth P7.5 million in Lumanglipa village in Mataas na Kahoy town in Batangas. The NDRRMC said the fish kill had affected 374 fish cages of 23 operators in Batangas; and 108 cages of 39 operators in six villages in Pangasinan. The fish kill has also brought down demand for bangus and tilapia in Metro Manila. Police and local government officials have also taken steps to make sure that the fish from affected areas do not reach markets in Metro Manila. However, last weekend, city veterinary office teams in Manila and Quezon City still managed to catch attempts to sell the tainted fish. In some cases, the tainted fish was mixed with fresh catch. - VVP, GMA News
