OFWs to celebrate PHL Independence Day in Taiwan


Some 77,000 Filipinos are expected to join the celebration of the Philippines' 113th Independence Day in Taiwan. According to Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA), the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) will host two major events:

  • June 12: talent contest "Pinoy Got Talent" at the Tanzi Elementary School Auditorium in Taichung, Taiwan, and
  • June 19: Taipei-Manila Workers’ Fun Day at the sports center of National Taiwan University. As of Friday, over 20 contestants have signed up for the talent show, the CNA said . The cash prize is NT$50,000 (P74,995). The show will be from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on June 12. MECO urged the Taiwanese people to join the celebration of the Philippine national holiday. There are around 395,944 migrant workers in Taiwan as of April this year, the CNA said. Filipino workers are the third largest group of migrants, accounting for nearly one-fifth of the whole migrant community. "There are 77,933 Filipino workers, with 53,868 of them working in the manufacturing sector and 22,994 people working as caregivers, according to figures released by the Council of Labor Affairs," the CNA said. - VVP, GMA News
