Weather: LPA may bring floods to southern Luzon, Mindanao

As it continues moving toward the West Philippine Sea, a low-pressure area (LPA) threatens to trigger floods and landslides on parts of Southern Luzon and Mindanao. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the LPA was estimated at 110 kilometers (km) west-southwest of Puerto Princesa City as of 8:00 a.m. on Monday. "(This) weather system is expected to bring scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms over Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao becoming widespread rains over Palawan, Mindoro and Southern Mindanao which may trigger flashfloods and landslides," PAGASA said in its 10:30 a.m. advisory. PAGASA said the LPA is embedded along Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) affecting Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Earlier, PAGASA said the LPA is heading toward the West Philippine Sea, with little chance of intensifying into a cyclone. Philippine-based weather site Typhoon2000 had said the LPA had a 20-percent ("low") chance of becoming a cyclone. - VVP, GMA News
