Chrome extension bypasses WSJ subscription

Cheapskate readers of the Wall Street Journal’s online edition may want this extension for Google’s Chrome browser, at least while it lasts. The “Read WSJ," a free extension in the Chrome Web Store, allows a reader to bypass the WSJ’s pay wall, by using Google’s search engine to “unlock" articles that require payment. “This is just a fun side project with absolutely no commercial motivations. Of-course, we would welcome donations, but it will be too much work to set it up for that ONE person who may consider it," the author said in the extension’s site. A separate report on tech site CNET said the app is basically a script that searches for cached versions of WSJ stories on Google. It added the “Read WSJ" app appears to be the latest workaround thwarting the pay wall. But CNET quoted Sara Blask, a spokesperson for DowJones - the Wall Street Journal’s parent company - who said the WSJ is working with Google to have the extension taken down. However, it added the app has already proliferated to be available for download on other app markets and websites. - TJD, GMA News
