Weather: LPA may bring landslides over Visayas, Mindanao

A low-pressure area off Mindanao threatens to trigger flash floods and landslides on parts of the Visayas and Mindanao, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Wednesday In its 10:30 a.m. update, PAGASA said the LPA was estimated at 250 km east of Mindanao as of 8 a.m., embedded along the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) affecting the Visayas and Mindanao. "These weather systems are expected to bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Visayas and Mindanao becoming widespread rains over Eastern Mindanao which may trigger flash floods and landslides," it said. Earlier, PAGASA forecaster Ben Oris said the LPA may merge with a potential cyclone presently approaching Philippine territory to pose a threat to the Philippines. Should the weather systems intensify into a cyclone in Philippine territory, the cyclone will be codenamed "Egay." Last Monday, Science Undersecretary Graciano Yumul Jr. said Filipinos can expect at least one to two more cyclones to enter Philippine territory before the end of June. Yumul said "three to four" cyclones historically visit the Philippines in June. — RSJ, GMA News
