EVE Online, other gaming sites hit by LulzSec hackers

Popular sci-fi multiplayer online game EVE Online is now among the latest victims of the hackers' group LulzSec, a computer security firm said Wednesday. Sophos said the group launched "Titanic Takeover Tuesday," targeting EVE Online's web serviers with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. The attack forced EVE Online's makers CCP Games to take the site completely offline for some hours Tuesday, it said in a blog post. Also hit were Escapist magazine's website, and online games Minecraft and League of Legends. Sophos said that it appeared that LulzSec was taking requests from online fans regarding which sites they would like to see hit next. "There don't appear to be any rhyme or reason behind these latest LulzSec attacks against gaming websites - they appear to be motivated purely for the group's own entertainment, at the expense - obviously - of the gaming companies and customers affected," Sophos explained. "If LulzSec is going to carry on having its 'fun' it will need to be very careful that it isn't leaving clues as to the identities of its individual members," it added. Meanwhile, initial results from a Sophos-initiated poll show that more than half of netizens do not approve of LulzSec's hacking. Of those who joined the poll, 52.1 percent said, "No, hacking into companies and launching DDoS attacks is no laughing matter." In contrast, 31.74 percent said, "Yes, they're funny. And they're making a serious point about security. More power to them!" Only 16.17 percent said, "Yes, they're funny. But I don't approve of what they're doing." — TJD, GMA News
