Lacson to reveal secrets in autobiography

A ranking police official turned senator who was implicated in a number of criminal activities including murder and had been once a subject of a year-long manhunt by government agents, is planning to write a book where he would reveal his “exploits." “I’m thinking about writing a book about my exploits, the colorful career that I had," Sen. Panfilo Lacson told reporters Thursday. Lacson, who led the Philippine National Police (PNP) during the short-lived Estrada administration, said the book will be about his “untold life" as a government official. “I’m thinking of including everything even those that I didn’t share with media in that book I’m thinking of," he said. Lacson’s career especially in the police force has been marred with several controversies, including his alleged involvement in the supposed rub-out of 11 members of the Kuratong Baleleng criminal group in 1995, and the murder of publicist Salvador “Bubby" Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito in 2000. In September 2001, former civilian police agent Mary “Rosebud" Ong told a Senate investigation that Lacson masterminded the abduction and summary execution of three suspected Chinese drug lords in 1999. Lacson, however, had never been convicted of any of the crimes linked to him. He won as senator in 2001 and was reelected in 2007. His bid to become president in 2004, however, was unsuccessful. Fugitive Lacson On Thursday, Lacson said he might also reveal in the book where he hid for more than a year after he was linked to the Dacer-Corbito case. He virtually disappeared in January last year and surfaced only last March, reportedly after hiding abroad, after the Court of Appeals ordered with finality the nullification of the arrest warrants and the charges lodged against him. “Like kung saan ako nagtago, pwede ko rin sabihin dun (I can also reveal that in the book)," said Lacson, who until now remained tight-lipped on the details on how he managed to elude pursuing National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and Interpol agents for more than a year. Lacson said the book will not be limited to the controversies linked to him. “[I will include] all other aspects, especially my untold stories about the other exploits. Pati (Even my) love life," he said in jest. Lacson is a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) class of 1971. Government career Lacson said that by the end of June, he would have served the government for 40 years: 20 years in the Philippine Constabulary, 10 years in the PNP, and 10 years in the Senate. As a senator, Lacson became known for his exposès against the Arroyo administration. He believed that the filing of charges against him in connection with the Dacer-Corbito murders was a political vendetta by the Arroyo camp. Although Lacson said he has no plans of running for public office when his term ends in 2013, he is not closing his doors if ever President Benigno Aquino III offers him a post. “It depends. When the time comes... [but] one thing I won’t do is apply for a government job.... you should wait to be tapped to perform a job," he said. Lacson had earlier denied rumors that he was being offered the post of secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG). - KBK, GMA News
