How to make your e-reader solar rechargeable

With a helpful hack, an e-reader device can now recharge using solar panels. Instructions on the web-based documentation site Instructables teach users of the Kobo e-reader how to take the device apart and fit in the solar panels. The Instructables user "Flapke," who offered the tips, said that the solar panels do work, charging the batteries after an hour. "I tested mine out by first checking the battery (it was at about 1/3rd) and then finding a nice bright sunny spot to charge. After an hour or so I checked the battery level again and it was at the next level (about 2/3rd)," Flapke said. Kobo users trying the instructions were reminded to wire the two panels in parallel, noting the pads marked "+" and "-." Users will need solar panels, a Schottky diode to prevent discharge of the battery, a soldering iron, soder, a dremel and double-sided tape. "Flapke" warned the 3.7-volt lithium-ion battery have "pretty tricky" charging curves: fast at first and trickle charge till full. Users were also cautioned against putting the reader in the full sun if the battery is already full. — TJD, GMA News
