PAL flight to Australia canceled due to volcanic ash

Flag-carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) on Tuesday canceled two flights to and from Australia due to volcanic ash there. PAL, on its Twitter account, said the affected flights were Flight PR-209 (Manila-Melbourne-Sydney) and Flight PR-210 (Melbourne-Sydney-Manila). The cancellation was "to ensure passenger safety against danger from volcanic cloud affecting air travel on some parts of Australia," PAL said. Affected passengers will be flown to their destination on Wednesday instead. They are encouraged to call 855-8888 in Manila or 1-300-888-PAL in Australia for more information. Reports earlier said cloud visibility in southern Australia has been hampered by the drifting ashes from the Chilean volcano Puyehue-Cordon Caulle, which erupted earlier this month and sent jets of volcanic ash into the air. - Mark D.
