Manila workers entitled to extra pay this June 24

Employees working in Manila this Friday, June 24, the 440th founding anniversary of the capital city, are entitled to extra pay, the Department of Labor and Employment said Wednesday. “If worked, Friday, June 24, 2011, an employee is entitled to 130 percent of his daily rate for the first eight hours, and to an additional 30 percent of his or her hourly rate on the said day for work performed in excess of eight hours," Labor Secretary Rosalina Baldoz explained. Baldoz added that if the employee works on his rest day, he is entitled to 150 percent of his regular daily rate plus 30 percent of his hourly date. If the employee works overtime, another 30 percent of the hourly rate should be added to his or her pay for that day. President Benigno S. Aquino III issued Proclamation No. 175 on May 20 declaring June 24 a special non-working day in Manila. The proclamation said “it is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Manila be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies." “If the worker or employee does not work on June 24, he or she is not entitled to any payment, unless the company has a favorable company policy, practice or collective bargaining agreement (CBA) granting payment for special days even if not worked," Baldoz said. — ELR/VS, GMA News
