Phivolcs allays tsunami fears after Japan quake


State seismologists on Thursday allayed fears of a tsunami affecting the Philippines following a magnitude-6.7 quake that hit Japan early on Thursday. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said there was no need to issue an alert for a tsunami threat from the quake. In an interview over radio dzBB on Thursday, Phivolcs seismologist Linda Amin said there was no tsunami alert on any part of the Philippines for now. Earlier, the United States Geological Survey said a magnitude-6.7 quake hit the east coast of Honshu at about 5:50 a.m. (Manila time) Thursday. The USGS estimated the epicenter of the quake at:

  • 88 kilometers (km) southeast of Hachinohe, Honshu, Japan
  • 99 km east-northeast of Morioka, Honshu, Japan
  • 157 km southeast of Aomori, Honshu, Japan
  • 524 km north-northeast of Tokyo, Japan - VVP, GMA News
