Gilas dump Malaysia in SEABA cagefest opener


Pilipinas-Smart Gilas rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to dump Malaysia, 97-71, in the 9th Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) men's championship Thursday at the BritAma Arena Sports Mall in Jakarta, Indonesia. JV Casio scored 15 of his team-high 19 points in the third quarter to help Gilas turn a 41-36 halftime deficit to a 63-57 advantage entering the final 10 minutes of the contest. Japeth Aguilar then took over in the final quarter as the 6-foot-11 big man scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds in a 16-2 exchange that gave Gilas a 20-point bulge with four minutes and 50 seconds left in the game. Casio also had three assists while Aguilar finished with 18 points and five rebounds. Naturalized player Marcus Douthit tallied 14 points and 15 rebounds while team skipper Chris Tiu added 12 markers and seven boards. Yeow Long Ho scored 11 to pace Malaysia, which shot just 36 percent (27-of-74) from the field against Gilas' 55 percent shooting clip (39-of-71). - Jon Perez, GMA News
