CHED: Let college, university heads decide on class suspension

The Commission on Higher Education is leaving to college and university officials the decision on whether or not to suspend classes on Friday. CHED executive director Julito Vitriolo said despite the heavy rain that fell on Metro Manila on Thursday, the conditions that would warrant an automatic suspension of classes at the collegiate level are not present. "Pinauubaya namin sa heads ng higher educational institution ang decision para suspindihin [ang klase]. Kung tingin nila kailangang kailangan [dahil] impassable ang roads, nasa kanila yan," he said in an interview on dzBB radio Thursday night. (We are letting the heads of higher educational institutions make the decision to suspend classes. If they think the roads will be impassable, it's up to them.) He said the CHED may automatically suspend classes in areas under Storm Signal No. 3. So far, Metro Manila is not under any storm signal. Besides, he said the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council had not advised the CHED to suspend classes at the collegiate level. "Wala kasing Storm Signal 3, walang direct advisory (There is no Storm Signal No. 3 and we have not had any direct advisory to suspend classes)," Vitriolo said. Vitriolo encouraged colleges to assess the situation and decide whether to suspend classes or not. "Sila na mag-assess sa kanilang lugar kung suspindi ang klase o hindi (It is up to them to decide whether to suspend classes or not)," he said. — KBK, GMA News
